Liz Scully – a journey on becoming a successful digital nomad
I’m so grateful I’ve followed Liz her workshop about running Masterminds, a method to bring a group of people together for brainstorming, education, peer accountability and support to sharpen their business and personal skills. She managed to entertain a large group of people for a couple of hours. Time ran by so quickly you didn’t even notice it. I could have listened to her the entire day.
A meeting in Ghent
When we connected on Facebook she suggested we would meet up some day. That day came quicker than anticipated because she happened to have a stop in Ghent when I came back from Spain. I jumped in my car and drove the 130 km to Ghent – a short distance when you have the chance to interview someone like Liz. It proved more than worth the drive for Hans – the photographer who made the nice pictures you see on this page – and me and we learned a lot from how Liz started her business.
Yes we can!
The encounter lived up to my (high 😉) expectations. Her story turned out to be one I can really relate to and that strengthened me in my quest. Just like me, Liz believes that making money by doing what you love isn’t that difficult and that working with groups is very powerful. Moreover: she is the living proof it can become reality!
A career change
Liz was very succesful in the filmindustry. She worked in the film industry for over 20 years, working in lighting for visual effects for (among others) Sony, Pixar, Kodak and Dreamworks as well as with many other famous ad agencies. A job which she liked a lot, but also a job that killed her softly due to long working hours. So she decided to quit and do something completely different. It was a process of years to become the entrepreneur she is now : a successful strategist who runs Mastermind groups for entrepreneurs, mostly from North America and Australia and she also teaches others how to run Mastermind groups.
Running Masterminds has had a great impact on her career as an entrepreneur. It gave her the right support to grow her business and to help others grow theirs. After all, the intelligence of a group is higher than that of a single individual and Masterminds makes this group intelligence more powerful by creating a deeper personal understanding, connection and resolution to tackle everyone’s issues together.
5 tips on how to become a successful entrepreneur
Let me give you some of the great tips she shared for those of us looking to make a change in our careers and to start as an entrepreneur. If you’re unsure about what you should do as an entrepreneur, start with making a list of the things that bring you joy. What makes you happy? This can be very small things. And keep that list around to look at when you are feeling down. It will help you to immediately take some steps to feel happy again.

If you start, make sure you have enough savings so you can live comfortably for over 2 years. Becoming successful doesn’t happen overnight!
To have some certainty or financial stability, it’s probably a good thing to have a parttime job aside.
Keep trying stuff. Before she started off with the Mastermind groups, she has done over 4 other things. So just start experimenting.
Don’t ever forget that your corporate experience has a lot of value and that it’s transferable into your career as an entrepreneur.
Finally she pointed out that when you have a clear idea of what you are looking for and when you start getting things in motion towards it, things will happen and come on your way automatically. So just start doing.
Peer Advisory Board Mastermind
Well, talking to her inspired me to follow in her foot steps and start a Peer Advisory Board Mastermind for entrepreneurs.
